Affirming the Disjunct

When the conclusion about one of two mutually exclusive options is true just because the other option is false. It is especially distinguished by affirming a disjunction. It is often committed together with the false dichotomy.

  • Either P or Q (when either creates disjunction)
  • Not P
  • Therefore Q

"Either he is studying or not studying for the exam. Therefore he must be playing video games."
